Time to Regroup | Mid-year No-Buy Update

My no-buy hasn’t been going well since May. I used stress and my birthday as excuses to shop. I don’t know if regroup is the right word for this since there’s no one to literally regroup but me, but something of the sort is definitely in order. I made an adjustment to my rules and started implementing a few things. I logged off Instagram I’ve been documenting my empties and no-buy-related activities on Instagram, but lately it’s been counterproductive. I mostly follow candid skincare and makeup enthusiasts and I find their influence stronger than people actually influencing for a living….

Cold Brew

The First Time I Made Cold Brew Coffee

I first thought of experimenting with making cold brew coffee when we were gifted with a huge tub of coarsely ground coffee beans. I thought, hey, since the beans are free I won’t feel so bad if the coffee doesn’t turn out good. Cold brewing is literally brewing coffee in cold (or room temperature) water. It’s steeped for 12-24 hours. The result is supposed to be coffee that’s smoother and less acidic. It also doesn’t go bad when stored in the refrigerator for up to a week in my experience. I read some articles that you can store it for…

Retinoids and Vitamin C Serum Inventory 2019

Beauty Inventory | Day 5A – Actives (Vitamin A Serums) + Reviews

I’ve been using topical retinoids / Vitamin A serums (e.g. tretinoin, adapalene, and more recently, retinol) for more than a decade now. This whole category of products is my ride or die. I decided to permanently switch to retinol from tretinoin because the latter is so fussy to use. A small deviation on the timing of use or quantity applied can result in flakes and dehydrated skin. You also have to quit at least a week before doing any activity involving a lot of direct sunlight, and when you get back on tretinoin again, back to flake-y skin and skincare…

Beauty Inventory | Day 4 – Chemical Exfoliants and Acid Toners

From last year’s 3, I’m down to 2 chemical exfoliators. The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution I only use this on the areas of my face that are prone to blackheads (i.e., my nose). It’s gel-type, and feels and dries like raw egg whites. I wish The Ordinary products have a more elegant texture. I guess they have to sacrifice something to keep their prices low. It took me a while to finish this because I prefer Alba Botanica AcneDote Lotion that also has 2% Salicylic Acid but comes in a cream-type moisturizing base. Anyway, I recently started using this…

Beauty Inventory | Day 3 – Cleansing Tools

Within the past year, I quit buying makeup wipes and I let go of my cleansing brush. I also recently stopped using micellar water which reduced my cotton pad consumption. Now I’m left with a green exfoliating cloth and a microfiber mitt. I use the green cloth to exfoliate my body. It can be found on shopee as “Italy Towel” and is also known as Korean Exfoliating Mitt. It feels almost like sandpaper so I avoid being rigorous with it. It gives a very satisfying physical exfoliation that I haven’t had the urge to buy body scrub since getting it….

Second Cleansers Inventory 2019

Beauty Inventory | Day 2 – Second Cleansers

Same as last year, I have 4, but this time a different set of products. Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser I bought this last year after I had CO2 Laser Resurfacing done. I needed something I was sure won’t irritate and strip my skin of moisture. Alba Botanica AcneDote Deep Pore Wash This is a gel-type cleanser with 2% Salicylic Acid. It’s not as drying as I thought it would be. I use this several days before and during my period to preempt and address any zit that might erupt. Jason Super-C Cleanser It’s a non-drying gel-type cleanser and smells overwhelmingly…
