Shiseido Sun Protection Stick Foundation Review

Shiseido Sun Protection Stick Foundation: Reviewed

There’s no better time to write this post than now. It’s summer!

I was going to wait until I’m almost finished with the stick but I think there’s already enough usage to make an entry.  I’m more than two-thirds of the way through.

I bought this foundation last year — weeks before our backpacking trip to Calaguas.

What was I looking for?

I bought it with the intention of using it for lounging at the beach or when I know I’m going to do a lot of walking under the sun.

I was hoping to find a multi-use product. Something that will:

  • Even out the skin-tone
  • Provide sun-protection
  • Reasonably stay put amidst water-splash and a little sweat

This foundation fits the bill.

General Product Information

  • Very water-resistant
  • Sweat-resistant

It is packaged in a summer-y turquoise tube that you twist at the bottom for the stick to come out — similar to common lip balm packaging. The product is easy to travel with. The cap snaps shut and does not fall off easily.

Once, I carried it in my hand on a 2-hour splash-y boat ride. I’m happy to report that the water didn’t get into the tube.

The product only comes in 3 shades:

  • Translucent, which you can’t really consider a shade
  • Ochre, which is a yellow-toned color
  • Beige, which is a pink-toned color

I find it odd that this foundation line only comes in 3 shades. Maybe that’s why the coverage is light to barely-medium, comparable to a tinted moisturizer that can even out the skin tone but wouldn’t hide much of your skin discolorations. That is fine with me because I usually prefer some imperfection to show through — and it’d be weird to walk around with a stark flawless caked-on face while on the beach.

My closest match is Ochre. When it’s summer and my skin turns a little more golden, it’s almost a perfect match.  But during the rest of the year, it can look peachy on my very yellow-toned skin.

It’s actually a good thing that the coverage is light. I can blend it to a point where it’s almost undetectable.

Staying Power

Very water-resistant plus sweat-resistant equals superb staying power.

Honestly, I don’t know what Shiseido meant when they labelled this as sweat-resistant. I took it to mean that the foundation stays even when you sweat. But when I used it, I thought it should have been labelled ‘anti-perspirant.’

This keeps me from sweating too much which is good and scary at the same time. But for the most part, I think that’s good because it keeps me from looking grungy. Sweat has to come out somewhere else anyway 😀

Application and Result

For a stick foundation, this glides on thinly, is easy to blend, and blends beautifully on the skin. I usually just swipe it heavily on areas where I get sun-burnt the most and blend it out with my fingers or with a buffing brush.

It is neither greasy nor sticky.

It gives a dewy-matte finish which is unexpected of a stick foundation on an oily person.

I get the best result when I apply it alone right after I towel dry my face. By the time I step out the door, my facial oils has already meshed with the foundation giving a very natural-looking glow that stays almost the entire day… and that’s with no setting powder.

It has no sunscreen smell.

What I love most with this product is its high-humidity friendly-ness. When you sweat, just pat your face dry with a tissue: you wouldn’t look unkempt at all.

For a sunblock with a high percentage of titanium dioxide, it doesn’t give off a ghostly face (see photo below).

Good oil-control — not that I believe there’s a product that can control oilies. I’m realistic to just look for a product that will not make me look un-neat when I oil up. This is one of those products.

Since I don’t have a decent camera now, I looked for photos of me wearing the foundation in the past months.

Skin Reactions

I didn’t experience any allergies or breakouts with this.

Value for Money

This is priced at Php 1,900 for 9 grams of product. It seems steep but I think it’s worth it if one of the shades matches you. I don’t use it every day but I estimate it to last a good 2 to 3 months of daily use.

It’s a 3-in-one product: sunblock, foundation, and primer.

Other Notes/ Tips

This may come as a surprise, but I don’t recommend this to dry-skinned people. On one occasion, when I had dry skin patches, this made them more evident.

If you’re oily, you can opt not to use a moisturizer under this. the emollients and occlusives in it are enough to hold the moisture in your skin.

If you need a little more coverage, you can use this as a primer. It’s an awesome mattifier.

Slept on this once. It didn’t transfer onto the pillow case. Yey!

Would I Recommend and Buy Again?

Yes and YES. It’s my time-saving foundation superhero. Think of this as tinted budge-proof sunblock stick. If you prefer more coverage in a foundation, this is NOT for you.

  4. The Reluctant Stylista

Hmm now I'm curious. My favorite combination so far is Jane Iredale's mineral pressed powder with The Face Shop's phytogenic makeup base. But Jane Iredale disappeared from our shores and now I'm on the quest again for my miracle combination. And I'm so lazy that foundation with spf or tinted moisturizer with spf is perfect for me! I think I'll give this a try. I'm very very yellow as well. (Plus you mentioned putting Ben Nye over it…I've been curious about that for some time now, too!)

  5. Thanks for posting this! Im not really a make-up kind of person but this sounds like a good idea when heading to the beach. Just sent a message to my friend who works in Shiseido to ask what shade I am :DAbout impeachment, that's nothing to be ashamed of 🙂 But I don't want to comment on anything more because I'm there for a reason and more than just a viewer. Hehe.Happy blessed week!oh, and Can I ask for a favor? Please like THIS PHOTO of me on a bridge? It's for a contest. Thanks in advance!
