Foundation Inventory + The Perfect Foundation Tag
The questions for this tag make me feel like a presentor for the Oscars of foundation. Does ‘Oscar’ care for makeup? Let’s name this The Cleopatra instead. (‘And the Cleopatra goes to…’ — has a ring to it, right?). Anyway, here’s a photo of all of my foundations, primers, powders, and a concealer that I mix with a water-based moisturizer. Note: I don’t have the Myra VitaGlow BB Cream anymore because I already gave it away.
I admit that my foundation shopping decision-making process is nonsensical. But in all of the times I’ve impulsively purchased a foundation, I’m sure that packaging was never a key deciding factor.
Since the day I broke a foundation bottle, I vowed that I will never buy a foundation in a glass bottle ever again (totally eating those words right now).
Given the recent circumstance, Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation brings home the Cleopatra for Best Packaging. I have the 18ml.-sized bottle which is made of plastic and has a pump that is easy to control. I also find the blue cap pretty.
Best Color Pay-off
I think this means, Best Coverage. I don’t like full-coverage foundations in general. I prefer tinted moisturizers and foundations that will make people say “Your skin looks good today.” instead of “Your makeup looks nice.” I only have one full-coverage foundation — Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer. Since the coverage is high, it’s very important that you find the perfect shade. Thankfully, I found mine — the result of long hours of googling, reading, and watching youtube videos. I use it more as a concealer. It’s the only full coverage foundation I have so I guess I it automatically wins this category.
Most Versatile (Build-able)
I don’t believe in buildable. There, I said it.
I think full coverage foundations are more versatile than buildable foundations because the former double up as concealers. If you want low coverage, you can always sheer them out. The most versatile in my collection is, again, Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer. If I’m only allowed one foundation, I would choose KA SSE in a heartbeat. I make tinted sunblocks with it. I use it under my eyes and on zits. I can and I have used it all over my face on weddings and formal occasions.
Best for Travelling
I don’t own this currently, but I’m sure I’ll repurchase Shiseido Sun Protection Stick Foundation in Ochre. It is easy to travel with, it has SPF 36++, and it’s sweat/waterproof.
If there’s one thing I regret, it’s not buying Nars Sheer Glow in Stromboli sooner. It’s a near-exact match considering that it’s medium/full coverage. (I know this is not what is asked for but I don’t think I’ve experienced regret in buying foundation.)
Best Color Names
I’m all for creative naming of color cosmetics e.g., lipsticks, eyeshadows, and blushes. But for foundations, I prefer the logical alpha-numeric coding system so I immediately know which ones are pink, peach, yellow, neutral, and olive, and which ones are darker or lighter. I’m not sure if there should be a “best” in this category but I’d say MAC and L’Oreal have a good foundation naming system. I also like Becca because they have a face base named “Olive” — you don’t see that everyday.
Ack, all of my foundations are not very frequently used. But my current least used foundation is Avon’s powder foundation in Oriental. It’s yellow but not yellow enough and it’s a shade too light for me right now.
Most Used, Most Loved. Desert Island
If I had to name just one — it’s Shiseido Sun Protection Stick Foundation. But I think that’s cheating because I don’t think it’s really a foundation. It’s a tinted sunblock stick at best. But I’ve already used 2 sticks and I know I will use up another one if I bought my third.
I’d have to name the nominees…
In the powder category, it’s Fashion 21 2-way Cake Foundation because it’s a really good match and I get a lot of compliments when I wear it.
In the liquid foundation category, hands down — Nars Sheer Glow in Stromboli. I don’t care if it doesn’t have a pump. It comes in my color (which is all that matters) and it makes my skin look unrealistically smooth, even toned, and nearly ‘poreless’. It’s sitting at that sweet spot where you draw the line between for special occasions and for everyday. People can definitely tell that you have it on but instead of looking caked up, you’ll look like you know what you’re doing with makeup (except, of course, if you pack it on). Since I’m moderately oily, it eventually looks very skin-like as my oils mesh with the product. But since I look like I have perfect skin when I wear it (I think), for sure it doesn’t look like I have nothing on my face.
In the cream category, I know you know what my answer’s going to be – Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer.
My most used face base right now (not necessarily most loved, but a good product nonetheless), is Maxi-Peel Concealing Cream in Natural. I know the name is synonymous to ‘cake face’ but this product is like your ordinary tinted moisturizer.

I tag all foundation hoarders in the universe. You know who you are guys! Special mention to Donna who has enough foundation to last 10 lifetimes (I’m not kidding.)
