Last year, I started setting aside money for Jude and Rose’s (JuRo) services after reading A LOT of reviews. Come 2015, I got interested in learning and practicing personal finance theories which resulted in the re-allocation of my JuRo budget. I made it one of my rewards instead — an experience I could treat myself with if I achieve my goal of eating healthy and making exercise a habit. I wasn’t able to achieve those goals and I feel a little guilty that I said yes to a complimentary JuRo cut and color. But I wasn’t crazy enough to pass up this chance just because I don’t deserve it (yet).
I don’t know what it was that morning, but I was feeling low. I was also not expecting that there is much that could be done color-wise because I arrived at 9:30 AM and Jude and Rose had to leave by noon for an appointment. There might not be enough time to color my hair. Can you tell how I can be so annoyingly pessimistic sometimes?
Anyway, I would tell you in detail what the salon looks like, but I don’t think it’s relevant so I’ll keep it short: the place is clean, modern, and minimal. It didn’t need fluff because people go to JuRo for the service, not to stare at walls or whatever.
As I entered the salon and after quick introductions, I was immediately seated. Jude asked me his signature — “What are we doing with your hair today?”
My brain froze. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my hair. I was actually ok with my then ‘good enough’ hair.
I wanted to say “please feel free to do whatever you want”. By that time it started to sink in that I am with the fabled hair whisperer who actually can bring to life any hairstyle I ask for. I got overwhelmed (with the endless possibilities?) and was almost speechless (exag, pero totoo!).
I guess Jude sensed this and quickly suggested a classic (and corrective) haircut, apt for first-time JuRo customers. At first, I didn’t realize how a corrective cut could significantly change my look until Jude finished the cut. It was mesmerizing how he did it because he looked chill and didn’t seem like he was doing much work at all (and I mean that as a compliment).
It was as if he was pruning a Bonzai tree — every snip was precise. He knows exactly where and how to cut my hair so that the layers hug my square face. Fact: I didn’t know my face is square-shaped until that day. All this time I thought my face was round. Probably because I was/am getting rounder overall, hehe.
This is me, a month after, with electric fan-dried, finger-combed hair. I might never settle for good enough hair anymore (if I had the money).
I think it was only after I washed my hair at home that I noticed that the waves in my hair are now curving at all the right places, creating life and volume.
As for color, I was sure I could NOT go for a hue that does not naturally occur in humans. I told Rose, but as if to help me push my boundaries — instead of going for a standard medium brown — Rose asked, “How about red?” I said, “OK”, then almost immediately asked myself, “What have I done?”
I don’t remember it taking that long. It must have been less than an hour — and with that short amount of time, Rose created the most beautiful red highlights I have ever seen in my life. The streaks looked random and homogeneous. I can’t explain it, so here are pictures:
It’s a work of art. Rose calls it “Elegant Red”. It’s a pain to photograph accurately. It looks like a purple-tinged wine red. Here’s the most accurate photo I could take when the light hits my hair.
Who knew red could look this good? I left the salon feeling more like Marvel’s Phoenix as opposed to the sullen creature I was when I came in. The feeling was similar to how an in-your-face red lipstick makes me feel.
I want to share so much more about Jude and Rose, but I’ll save it for next time. Until then, I’ll make sure I’ll deserve my treat.
